Fall Nail Colors 2026: What’s Trending and the Three Shades I’m Actually Wearing

Deep burgundy on my toes, pale taupe on my fingers, and a fall nail world full of chocolate brown. You know how I love my chocolate. 

Every spring and summer I read the nail trend reports with mild curiosity and then go do exactly what I was already planning to do. Fall is the one season that actually changes my mind. As the weather cools and the new season arrives, the colors shift — burgundy and deep plum and chocolate brown and forest green — and those are colors I genuinely want to wear. Butter yellow is not happening here. But a moody plum in October? I am in.

If you have been following along, you know I did this for spring and summer too. The formula has not changed much: pale and neutral on my fingers, something with personality on my toes. Fall just makes the toes more interesting. I have been reading about fall nail colors and fall nail designs for 2026 and I have thoughts. But first, the colors.

What’s on the Radar for Fall Nail Colors 2026

The bright summer shades are going back in the drawer, the hot pinks, the corals, the bubblegum colors that belong at the pool. What comes out instead is the palette that makes fall the best season for nails. Earthy. Rich. A little moody. I have been looking forward to this since July.

Chocolate brown is the shade everyone is talking about this fall. Brown nails have been building for a couple of seasons and this year it feels like they are here to stay. The appeal makes sense: warm tones work on every skin tone, it looks lovely against cozy sweaters, and it works for a Tuesday errand run or a Saturday dinner without changing your nails. A sophisticated look that requires almost no effort. If you have been hovering over a nude base wondering whether to go a little darker, this might be your year. Mocha mousse is the softer version if a full chocolate brown feels like too much.

Deep burgundy is, as always, here. Burgundy nails never really leave fall, this year’s version has more plum in it than the straight red-wine of seasons past. It works for everything and everyone, short nails and long nails alike, which is probably why it is always the top choice at the nail salon this time of year. If you have never gone wrong with burgundy before, you will not go wrong now.

Ruby red is back with a high-gloss energy and worth a look if you find burgundy a little safe. It lands right between a deep burgundy and a classic red, which makes it one of the more wearable fall nail colors of the season. Warm tones, goes with everything.

Forest green took me a while to come around to, I will be honest. The version trending now is more woodsy than bright, a green that reads almost as a neutral against fall clothes rather than a statement. It sits beautifully next to camel, cream, leather jackets, and anything in your closet that is already the color of October. Deep reds look stunning next to it, if you want to try something different on each hand, which I would never do but some people carry off beautifully. Olive green is also having a moment this fall, though forest green is the one getting all the attention.

Moody plum and deep plum are for anyone who finds burgundy a little predictable but is not quite ready for green. Think of it as the middle ground: darker than a dusty rose or soft pink, moodier than a standard neutral, without the full commitment of a jewel tone. Good for everyday wear and easy to dress up.

Warm metallics are also showing up this fall, antique gold, spiced copper, earthy brown. More old gold jewelry than glitter, which is exactly right. They show up as accent details and as full manicures both, and the effect leans more quiet luxury than holiday shimmer.

Fall Nail Designs Worth Knowing About

I am a solid-color-on-a-clean-nail person. Always have been. Nail art is something I admire on other people and leave entirely for other people. That said, I read about what is trending in fall nail art designs this season and two of them actually gave me pause, which almost never happens.

Tortoiseshell is the most requested autumn nail design in salons right now and has been for a couple of seasons. Amber, warm brown, black, and gold layered on a nude base or burgundy base. It looks far more complicated than it apparently is, and it happens to use every color the season is already wearing in the trees outside. If you want a fall nail art design that feels seasonally right without going over the top, this is a good one to ask for by name.

The micro French tip is replacing traditional French tips for a lot of women who love the look but want something a little more current. Instead of the thicker white band, a very fine line in a contrasting shade, deep burgundy, chocolate brown, or gold, over a sheer blush or nude base. It works especially well on shorter nails where a traditional French tip can look a little heavy. This is the one I am actually considering. Simple nail designs done well have always been my preference.

Leopard print is back this fall in a warmer, more muted version, tan, brown, and gold in a different pattern that reads more like a texture than a graphic. On short nails this version is genuinely wearable for everyday wear. It is the first leopard print nail I have ever looked at and thought: I could actually do that. (I will not. But still.)

Aura nails are crossing into fall nail territory this season. The effect is a soft blur of color around a neutral base, moody plum and warm gold are the fall versions. Another one to ask for by name at the nail salon if you want something a little different without intricate designs.

A gold foil accent on a single ring finger adds enough warmth to make simple fall nails feel like a deliberate choice for a special occasion. A gold glitter accent nail does the same thing. Either one works without too much surface area committed to something you might not want to maintain.

Matte finishes are having a moment this fall. A matte base or matte topcoat over a deep burgundy or chocolate brown changes the whole feel of the color, from glossy and cheerful to something muted and rich. Worth trying at least once. Ask your nail tech what they have, or pick up a matte topcoat for your home manicure and experiment.

The Shades I’m Actually Reaching For

My hands and my toes have always had different polish. My hands want something that disappears. My toes want to be noticed. Fall just means the toes finally get to be interesting.

For my hands: OPI Can’t Hardly Wait. A pale taupe that is polished without competing with anything. In fall, when everything in my wardrobe is getting richer and more layered, that is exactly what I need from my nails. Neutral colors on the fingers, personality on the toes.

For my toes from September through December: Essie Bordeaux. A deep wine-red that delivers completely on its name. I do my own toes on the bathroom floor and one of the dogs always decides that is the perfect moment to climb into my lap, so two easy coats matters more than I can say.

For anyone who wants something dark on their hands: OPI Malaga Wine. A rich classic burgundy that has been in the OPI line since 1989, which tells you everything about how popular this shade has always been. Works from early fall straight through winter without ever looking like it is trying too hard. If the chocolate brown moment is not for you but you still want to lean into the fall look, this is where I would start.

For anyone doing their own nails at home: Sally Hansen Cabernet. A deep red-burgundy at a fraction of the price of OPI or Essie. For a color that is going on your toes and living in boots until February, there is no reason to spend more. Simple fall nails do not require a premium price point. An easy way to try the trend without committing.

A Note on Topcoats

Whatever you choose, try a matte topcoat at least once this season. A matte finish over a deep burgundy or chocolate brown completely changes the color, from glossy and cheerful to something quieter and richer. The Essie Matte About You topcoat works over any polish and dries quickly. A cat-eye finish is also showing up this fall for anyone who wants a subtle shimmer that shifts in the light, more interesting than glitter, easier to wear than a full metallic. Worth keeping an eye out for at the salon.

Fall is the season that makes all of this feel worth it. The shift in light, the richer wardrobe, the cozy neutrals coming back out of the closet. A new nail color in September is a twelve-dollar luxury that lasts straight through Christmas. It takes center stage in a way that a summer color never quite does, maybe because everything else is layered and cozy and the nails are the one small thing you can see clearly.
