Welcome to Friday Favorites, a weekly series where I share interesting articles, books, fashion finds, recipes and more.

Good morning friends, how are you this Friday favorites morning? It’s another rainy day here, unlike last week today the house has a few contractors finishing up the kitchen so there will be no quiet day at the house baking and reading. Yes, I said finishing up! Hopefully by the end of the day the painters will be done with the laundry, kitchen and dining room. After that all that is left  is a little more tile work and a few punch list items.

Ok, let’s get to the good stuff. Grab your coffee, tea, cocoa or wine and settle in for Friday Favorites!

Books

Since this is the last week of August and for many the “end of summer” I thought I would share a selection of summer books.

Friday Favorites book cover of Summer Hours

Summer Hours

Thirty-three-year-old Becc Reardon has tried hard to forget the all-consuming relationship that upended her life one summer in college. But when a mutual friend’s wedding means road-tripping up the California coast with a man from the past, she can’t resist one last chance at a reunion.

From gorgeous beaches to quaint hotels, each stop along the way is a reminder of their memories together—the infinite nights at bonfires, the sneaky midday movie sessions. And soon enough, Becc is happily speeding beside the ocean waves with the funny, adventurous person she used to love and wondering what the future holds beyond the weekend.

But when the pair unexpectedly arrive at the location of their long-ago flameout, old heartbreaks flood back, and Becc will have to decide if those dazzling hours they once shared are worth fighting for before the trip ends and they’re lost forever. Set in the mid ’90s and 2008, Summer Hours is about love, female coming of age, the power of nostalgia, and what happens when you realize you haven’t become the person you’d always promised to be.

Friday Favorites Summer House

The Summer House

Lily Bishop wakes up one morning to find a good-bye note and divorce papers from her husband on the kitchen counter. Having just moved to Alabama for his job only weeks before, Lily is devastated. New to town and knowing no one, Lily finds herself in desperate need of a job and a new place to live. When Lily hears that a hair stylist is needed at small retirement community, she decides to apply.

Rose Carrigan built the small retirement village of Safe Harbor years ago—just before her husband ran off with his assistant. Now she runs a tight ship, making sure the residents follow her strict rules. Rose keeps everyone at arm’s length, including her own family. But when Lily shows up asking for a job and a place to live, Rose’s cold exterior begins to thaw.

Lily and Rose form an unlikely friendship, and Lily’s salon soon becomes the place where the colorful residents share town gossip and a few secrets. Lily soon finds herself drawn to Rose’s nephew, Rawlins—a single dad and shrimper who’s had some practice at starting over—and one of the residents may be carrying a torch for Rose as well.

Neither Lily nor Rose is where she expected to be, but the summer makes them both wonder if there’s more to life and love than what they’ve experienced so far.

Friday Favorites The Bitter and Sweet of Cherry Season

The Bitter and Sweet of Cherry Season

In cherry season, anything is possible…

Everything Hope knows about the Orchard House is from the stories of her late mother. So when she arrives at the northern Michigan family estate late one night with a terrible secret and her ten-year-old daughter in tow, she’s not sure if she’ll be welcomed or turned away with a shotgun by the aunt she has never met.

Hope’s aunt, Peg, has lived in the Orchard House all her life, though the property has seen better days. She agrees to take Hope in if, in exchange, Hope helps with the cherry harvest—not exactly Hope’s specialty, but she’s out of options. As Hope works the orchard alongside her aunt, daughter and a kind man she finds increasingly difficult to ignore, a new life begins to blossom. But the mistakes of the past are never far behind, and soon the women will find themselves fighting harder than ever for their family roots and for each other.

  1. Hope you have a wonderful weekend too, Elizabeth! Love the peach cake – I have pinned it to try. You’ve got some lovely fall fashion suggestions there too, I’m feeling very inspired. I do love the quote as well. Thank you for a wonderful read!

  2. That bean stew looks so good! Growing up, we had variations of “bean meals” about three times per week. Cheap and filling. The book “The Summer House” has piqued my interest.
