WEEKEND MEANDERINGS

Good Saturday morning to you friends. It’s time for Weekend Meanderings with Kim and Juliet! This is our weekly series where we share all of the things that piqued our interests and caught our eye.

Things are in limbo here since the tree fell on the house Thursday. It was a long, busy, nerve wracking day to get the tree off the house and the hole and roof covered before the next round of storms. The house is a mess, not just from the tree but because everything in that room is now all over the rest of the house. It was a bit of a scramble to empty the room. The 50 year old tree is sitting in the front yard in pieces waiting to be picked up on Monday.

We will have a bevy of appointments with insurance, contractors, landscapers, HVAC, etc next week. For now we wait.

What about you, what are your plans for the weekend?

Ok, lets get to the fun stuff!

There is something interesting to look at in every room and they all provide inspiration for collected interior lovers.

National Gardening Day April 14th

Tomorrow is National Gardening Day, so get your hands in the dirt and celebrate. Gardening has something to offer everyone, not to mention that it is good for you; it gets you outside, teaches you patience and is a great way to connect with family and friends. I will be honest, I am not a a very good gardener but I am trying. My biggest obstacles seem to be the deer, sadly they like my wildflower garden, and the tomatoes, peppers, sweet potatoes and every other thing I planted last year and my patience.

Do you like to garden? What is your favorite thing to plant? Any tips about the deer?

How to start a garden?

  • Start small and grow some herbs, tomatoes or peppers in containers on your balcony or back porch.
  • Join a community garden.
  • Grow things indoors in small containers.
  • Grow flowers or a wild flower garden.
  • Pick the right spot, ideally your garden and containers will get 6-8 hours of sunlight a day.
  • Learn about your gardening zone so that you know what plants will grow in your area and the best time to plant them.
  • Pick the right spot, container, raised bed or a garden plot.
  • Check your soil for ph and health, you might have to amend it.
  • Compost is always a good idea.
  • Pick your seeds or plants.
  • Start your seeds indoors, harden them off and plant after the last frost.
  • Enjoy the process, and the fruits and vegetables of your hard labor.

Beatrix Potter

Speaking of nature, if you are visiting NY between now and June 9th you might enjoy Beatrix Potter: Drawn to Nature at the Morgan Library and Museum.

Drawn to Nature brings together artwork, books, manuscripts, and artifacts from several institutions in the United Kingdom, including the Victoria and Albert Museum, the National Trust, and the Armitt Museum and Library. Paired with the Morgan’s exceptional collection of her picture letters, these objects trace how Potter’s innovative blend of scientific observation and imaginative storytelling shaped some of the world’s most popular children’s books.

If you are visiting the UK and the Lake District be sure to visit Hill Top Beatrix Potters’ house and inspiration for her books. It is a beautiful area and one of my favorite places in the UK.

Be Ready When the Luck Happens: A Memoir~Ina Garten

Ina Garten Be Ready When the Luck Happens book cover.

Be Ready When the Luck Happens is Ina Gartens’ long awaited memoir. Ina otherwise know as the Barefoot Contessa has written a new book, not a cookbook but a memoir about her life, her upbringing, how she met Jeffrey, her government job that she traded for The Barefoot Contessa shop, why she never had children and everything else you always wanted to know about her. I pre-ordered my copy and cannot wait to read it!

Here, for the first time, Ina Garten presents an intimate, entertaining, and inspiring account of her remarkable journey. Ina’s gift is to make everything look easy, yet all her accomplishments have been the result of hard work, audacious choices, and exquisite attention to detail. In her unmistakable voice (no one tells a story like Ina), she brings her past and her process to life in a high-spirited and no-holds-barred memoir that chronicles decades of personal challenges, adventures (and misadventures) and unexpected career twists, all delivered with her signature combination of playfulness and purpose.

You can see Ina live at the Kennedy Center or Segerstrom Center for the Arts.

  1. Elizabeth, I’m so sorry, I still can’t believe what happened to your house. Ugh. Thanks goodness the immediate issues of getting the tree off the house and securing the opening happened quickly, but I feel for you in terms of the long journey ahead. And I hope the storms have now passed and you catch a break. On a happier note, I’m so excited about Ina’s biography … do we really have to wait until October. Eek. Well, I appreciate the heads up and I pre-ordered. It’s going to be a blockbuster. Hope you find some comfort and joy in your weekend. Take care my friend. xoxo

  2. I’m glad to read no people or pups were hurt by the falling tree!
No, I’m not familiar with Ham Interiors. But based on the photos you posted, I am going to check them out. I might even buy a plant tomorrow. lol

  3. I’m so sorry to read about the tree, how shocking for you. I’m incredibly impressed at how you have dealt with it so calmly, I hope you don’t have too long a wait to get everything sorted. Sending love xxx

  4. Elizabeth, I just can’t imagine all you are going through with the tree. I’m so glad you and your pups are okay. Living through cleanup and repair is a lot also. Take care of yourself.
You still turned out a fun blog. Don’t know how you did it.
Ham Interiors is really lovely and I will check them out.
I’m super excited for the Ina memoir! Your outfits are lovely and especially the black and straw bag.

Great garden tips. I am just about to start thinking about tomatoes and what we will grow, but I won’t plant until May because you need warm nights as my dad says. Also, another tip is start with plants in the ground, not seed for veggies. Have you guys tried netting things so the deer don’t eat them or fencing? I don’t know if that’s an option?

Hope you get some rest this weekend Elizabeth. Sending hugs to you.

  5. Hi Elizabeth,
So sorry to hear about your tree.Such a relief it sis not cause major structural damage. Sending you a hug!

    1. Thank you Frances. It is a relief that we are all ok. Hopefully once the assessment is done there will not be “too much” damage.
      HAve a wonderful day.
