Monday Musings No. 164

Good morning friends! How was your weekend?

The last few days the weather has been sunny and mild. Not too hot, which is a good thing because it is way too early to turn on the air conditioner.

Friday we did a little work in the yard. I planted a few pots, not too many because the deer eat everything and I am weary of fighting them off. The peonies are staked and growing so fast, I have 2 that are almost a foot high already.

This year I followed the same “tutorial” from Emily at Eleven Gables that I used last year when planting my ferns. Emily cuts the ferns in 1/2 or 1/4’s and then plants them in pots. This method saves money and you get more plants.

Saturday they removed the carpet from the master bedroom and now we are ready for paint, hopefully in the next week or so.Today they are measuring for carpet and setting the install date. Progress!

Aside from that the weekend was restful. I read two great books, one of which I am sharing today and a stack of magazines. I love magazines, do you? Tell me a few of your favorites.

Ok, let’s get to 5 Things!

1. Read~You and Me Always

you and me always book cover with a shattered rose.

I loved this book! I read it in one sitting Friday night.

On the eve of her wedding to Adam, Lily’s best friend Josh unexpectedly walked out of her life, and she hasn’t seen him since.

Lily and Adam are blissfully happy, until he falls ill. As she cares for him in his final hours, Adam asks her to make a mysterious promise: to find Josh—and forgive them both.

This winter…

Tracking Josh down isn’t easy, but fate seems determined to bring them together. Cut off in his remote Scottish cabin by a fierce snowstorm, Lily and Josh explore their tangled feelings for each other, stretching back over the decades. But when she discovers the shocking reason behind Adam’s unexpected last wish, she’ll need to trust her heart completely…

Can Lily and Josh choose love—and find forgiveness and lasting happiness together?

4. SHOPPING BREAK~OUTFIT OF THE DAY

Linen Black and White Outfit with black pants, white shirt, black and white sweater, black sandals and a black and wicker bag Fashion Over 50.

It’s linen season! Some people love the ease and look of linen and some people hate it because of the wrinkles. Personally, I love it! It is casual and effortless not to mention cool on hot humid days.

This week I put together a black and white linen outfit with black linen pants, a white linen shirt and a sweater because it is that time of year that you never know what the temperatures will be. Paired with a cute back and some stripy sandals. You can wear this outfit all spring and summer long and the pieces are classics, you probably have one or two in your closet right now.

  1. Elizabeth, I look forward to your posts and enjoy reading them with my morning coffee. I just want to thank you for keeping politics out of your lovely blog.

    1. Good morning Kathy,
I am so happy that you enjoy the blog!
Truth be told, I am a wimp. I get enough flack and nasty comments because of the recipes, clothes, books, my photos and more on this blog that I stay clear of controversial things. I do not need the stress in my life.

That said, I applaud people that stand by their convictions and use their platform to share their thoughts and views on things that are important to them, like my friend Kim from Weekend Meanderings.

Politics are in my “blood” I studied political science and international relations for years, I have a Masters in International relations and worked in politics for many years as well. I have learned that for me it is not worth the arguments and fights, more often than not with my own relatives and friends. My “work” now is behind the scenes so to speak.

I hope that you have a wonderful week!

  2. I still enjoy magazines even though they certainly aren’t what they used to be. My favorite at the moment is Country Home. Also, I appreciate that your blog is a non political space, and there are few of those in the world right now.

    1. Paula, I could not agree more about magazines. They are nothing like they used to be. I love the English magazines, they are still filled with beautiful houses, decor and substance. Although I subscribe to a few of them I get most of them from my library and read them on my Kindle. Not the same as turning the pages but still enjoyable.
      Have a wonderful day!

    1. Brenda, the weather here is up and down. Hopefully soon we will all see Spring. I hope that you are not getting any bad weather or storms.
Thank you Brenda, I know that you know how it is because you are in a new house and having things fixed and done.
      Have a wonderful evening.

  3. I want to thank you for keeping the political comments off your blog as other commenters have mentioned. We live enough of that each day and want to keep up with you ladies and things that are relevant and enjoyable at this point in our lives. That does not mean our heads are stuck in the sand when it comes to what is going on in our country and world. It means to counter some of that, we sometimes need a soft place to land. I miss Juliet’s posts. And I marvel that you are able to do all that you do! Thank you for your continued inspiration.

    1. Deanna,
I appreciate you saying that. I am always looking for something new to make, learn or to explore, it’s why I started the blog, to share all of the things I enjoy with family and friends. We all need an “escape” from the trials and trubulations of life as well as intellectual stimulation and “conversation” with like minded people.
It certainly does not mean that we are not interested the our village, city, state, country or world events.
The good news is that Juliet will be back soon. She is just getting Snowberry ready to sell and finding a place to live. I miss her posts too, she is witty and fun and a great addition to Weekend Meanderings. I think the 3 of us are a great combination.
      Have a wonderful week!

  4. I wonder what the world is coming to, that you receive nasty comments over photos, recipes etc. Can’t people just move on. Must say, I am loving the last few outfits you have put together. Love, love linen.

    1. It is very strange. I was raised that if you can’t say something nice don’t say anything at all. Apparently that is not the case any more.
Thank you! I love the outfits too! Linen is so comfortable and classic.
      Have a wonderful day Rita.

  5. Hi Elizabeth,
I marvel at all you do, and the talents you have for so many things.
Wow, you have an interesting business background and education. I totally understand you staying away from political things. It can raise ill feelings. I went through that with a family member and I feel it’s altered our relationship. That makes me sad.
It sounds like you are making positive headway with your beautiful home. You have the right attitude about being patient. A day at a time right.
Magazines, I get delivered Vogue, and AD. I’ve thought about subscribing to National Geographic and The New Yorker but I don’t think I would ever have the time to do them justice. We are getting a larger and brand new library in hopefully another year or so in our community. I’m hoping they will be expanding their magazine section that I can take out. I’m one of those vintage gals that like to hold a book or whatever.
Elizabeth, I was raised exactly the way you were, “if you don’t” etc. . It’s too bad you have had negative feedback at times regarding your blog. Here I go with my opinions, these folks just should just unsubscribe. and say nothing.
You are such a lovely person and I know you work very hard and enjoy the content you share with us.
Sending you a happy and joyful day full of light.

    1. Katherine, I too prefer magazine that I can turn the page and linger over. But ever since I discovered the treasure trove of magazines from all over the world on the Libby app at my library I have been over the moon. Currently I have 30 magazines from the UK, France, Spain, Scotland and the US on my kindle. It is fun to look at the fashion, interiors, etc from other countries.
As well as all of the fun recipes. I think if you enjoy those 2 magazines you should try them on Kindle. Also check out the Smithsonian and the BBC magazine, they are nothing fabulous!
If is shocking and amazing what this world has come to. There is no empathy or manners any more and the things people say and do to one another on social media are truly astounding.
Thank you my friend for your always kind comments, you make my day!
      Have a wonderful week.

  6. Hi Elizabeth … such a frustrating situation with the deer. We have our flowers fenced in, but some sort of garden gremlin eats them anyway. It’s an ongoing battle from coast to coast! Thanks for the book rec … and Homeworthy video which I of course I had to watch right away. Have the best week! xo
