WEEKEND MEANDERINGS

Good morning and a happy Saturday to you! It’s time for weekend meandering with Kim and Juliet, our weekly series where we share all of the things that piqued our interest and caught our eye over the past week.

Current Events and Thoughts from This Week

Like most of you I am sad, disheartened and heartbroken for the innocent lives lost this week in Israel and Gaza. It is surreal that thousands of bombs are raining down on the Gaza stripe and in Israel and here we are, a world away, sipping pumpkin spiced lattes and shopping Amazon Prime days.

I find that things like this are hard to talk about, there are many sides and opinions. That is evidenced by the news coverage and the protest around the world. Not to mention that in this day and age there is so much vitriol and hate it is hard to have a conversation about many, most, no, make that all topics.

Quote 'Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me, and there was no one left to speak for me.'

What I do know and believe is that NO ONE deserves to die at a concert, or while sleeping in their bed. A baby does not deserve to have its’ life cut short and a woman does not deserve to be assaulted then paraded thru the streets naked for people to take photos, then share them to social media.

Can you image the agony of not knowing where your child, dad, mom, brother, sister, aunt, uncle, grandparents are? 153 people are being held hostage and there is no news of them. We do not know if they are being fed, given medical attention or even where they are. I pray they are alive. I pray for peace but that is something that I do not think I will see in my lifetime.

Evil is evil no matter what they call themselves.

You don’t read my blog for opinions and politics but I can’t sit by and not mention it. I received a certificate in  Holocaust literature in college and have continued to study it over the years. It seemed like an unimaginable nightmare then, and yet, was real. Just as it is real now.

Hold your loved ones close my friends. Here are ways to help if you would like.

On a lighter note, let’s meander.

One to Follow~Jessica Buckley

Recently, I discovered  Scottish interior designer Jessica Buckley and fell in love with her work. It is classic and traditional with a modern twist, layers of color, pattern and pops of color to create a collected pace that looks like it has evolved over time.

Jessica Buckley

“Jessica Buckley Interiors was established in 2011, offering a fully tailored design service to discerning clients across the world.

Jessica’s fresh aesthetic and instinctive sense of style is a result of a life long passion for beautifully decorated homes and her appreciation for living in a home that you truly love. Her love of beautiful fabrics, colour and pattern continues to influence her design approach, inspiring an ability to combine styles from different eras and cultures to create sophisticated and elegant homes.

Fashioned By Sargent at MFA Boston

Art and fashion lovers add this stunning exhibition of John Singer Sargent to your calendar. The show runs October 8, 2023–January 15, 2024  at the MFABoston.  The good news is that even if you cannot be there in person there are live stream tickets available for all one them events.

“In portraits by John Singer Sargent (1856–1925), sitters assume elegant stances, the fabric of their dress richly depicted in broad, sensuous strokes of paint. Sargent brought his subjects to life, but he did much more than simply record what appeared before him. He often chose what his sitters wore and, even if they arrived in his studio dressed in the latest fashions, he frequently simplified and altered the details. Exploiting dress was an integral part of his artistry.

Portrait Of Madame X By John Singer Sargent

Organized with Tate Britain, “Fashioned by Sargent” explores the artist’s complex relationship with his often-affluent clients and their clothes. The exhibition reveals Sargent’s power over his sitters’ images by considering the liberties he took with sartorial choices to express distinctive personalities, social positions, professions, gender identities, and nationalities. Alongside about 50 paintings by Sargent, over a dozen period garments and accessories shed new light on the relationship between fashion and this beloved artist’s creative practice.”

Be sure to “visit” the MFA Boston to watch behind the scenes videos  with the curator of the exhibition, the cleaning of some of the paintings and the installation of the exhibit. It is fascinating.

  1. Elizabeth, thank you for sharing from your heart. We live in sad times these days. I appreciate your opinions. And, I fell in love with Jessica and her style. Thank you for sharing her beautiful work.

  2. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and not moving along as if nothing is going on in the world. I too have reading a lot of MLK quotes.

    1. Thank you Leslie. There are so many “schools of thought” in blogland about sharing your thoughts on any major event. My feeling is that you/me have to do what feels right for us.
I read that the very first day Kyle or Kindle Jenner voiced their support for Israel and they were torn to shreds by their followers. Eventually they took down their post, I guess they didn’t want to get “cancelled”.
MLK has a lot of wisdom for all of us.
Have a wonderful weekend and thank you again.

  3. Elizabeth, thanks for sharing you thoughts on the tragedy unfolding in the Middle East. I agree it’s very hard to talk about … yet impossible to ignore. I’m afraid the coming days will bring further strife and I pray for a long overdue solution to the terror and retaliation cycle. As always, I love your weekly finds and will be heading down these rabbit holes tonight after a busy weekend. Wishing you a beautiful week ahead. xo

  4. Elizabeth, Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the conflict. I think it helps to share and gosh we are all human. How can we not bring this up? I didn’t know you studied Holocaust Litrature. I am sure you have more insight into all this than most of us. LIike you said, it is hard to go about the day to day when others are suffering so badly. I feel for the Israeli people. The stories of those gone and missing hurt to even hear about. I also feel for those in Gaza who innocent and are being killed and displaced. None of this is good.

I am excited about Jessica… I like her style and so fun to know a Scottish designer..
I adore Sergeant and we just had his Spain exhibition here in SF! Wish I could go to this.

  5. Sorry Elizabeth I had to start over my computer crashed..
I meant to also say, thank you so much for mentioning the purse post. That was very sweet of you…,
I love the handbag that you posted in the first outfit look. Super cute and so is the outfit!! I did not have time to check out the Amazon sale so I appreciate you posting all these cool things. I will go through that tonight.
I also read your Friday post on Sunday afternoons usually but I’m behind this week so I’ll do it tomorrow with my tea!!
I want to watch the videos also!!
Thank you for all the wonderful things you gather.
    Take care this week. ❤️

  6. Elizabeth: Thank you for speaking of the unspeakable horrors unfolding in the Middle East. We mothers, sisters, daughters, aunts, nieces, grandmothers, granddaughters, friends… must speak up. Every generation knows too well the outcome if we stay silent. I appreciate knowing another woman understands the heartbreaking situation. Thank you!

    1. Thank you Nan. These are frightening times all over the Middle East. Women sadly are not respected by men all over the world and on a daily basis unspeakable things happen to them.
WE ALL NEED TO SPEAK UP!
      Have a great day!
      Elizabeth
