WEEKEND MEANDERINGS

Good Saturday morning to you friends. It’s time for Weekend Meanderings with Kim and Juliet! This is our weekly series where we share all of the things that piqued our interests and caught our eye.

It has been a busy and fun week. For those of you that are new, the US Open golf championship is being held at our club and in our village. Thankfully the traffic is nothing like we were told it would be, the addition of the Amtrak service from Raleigh and the 130 busses moving people around has lessened the impact and disruption. It has also made the event less stressful for all of the visitors.

US OPEN Pinehurst

Monday we went to the practice round. We walked from our house and arrived at 6:30, not too many people were up at that time. Luckily Tiger Woods, Jordan Spieth, Ricki Fowler and Justin Thomas(all shown above) had just arrived to the practice tee as we walked up. Wether you are a golf fan or not, it’s a thrill to see some of the “Greats” in golf play, joke around and to see the excitement from the spectators who love them and cheer them on.

From the warmup tee to the famous No. 2 course we followed Tiger as he played. Then walked the entire 18 holes again, and all the way home at the end. 17 miles in all and I do not mind telling you that I was TIRED by the time we got home. It was a long, but fun day.

I skipped going to the tournament the rest of the week, it was too crowded for me. But we did go to a few bbq’s’ and parties. By Sunday evening I will need a vacation from all of this fun.

Ok, enough about me let’s meander.

Dewar’s Lemon Wedge~U.S. Open Golf

Tomorrow is the final of the U.S Open, why not enjoy the game with the official cocktail, a Dewar’s Lemon Wedge.

Francophiles you are going to fall in love with Maison Dubreuil. A beautiful, new build made to look like the restored farmhouse of the American owners. Maison Dubreuil is available for weddings, corporate events, parties and more.

The house is beautifully decorated, warm, cozy and a great base for visits to Saint Emilion. It is filled with antiques and vintage finds. There is a private chef and a pool for the days you need a break from wine tasting and touring Bordeaux and the surrounding areas. The American owners have provided every comfort you could need while staying in the gorgeous house.

By the way, if you have never been to Bordeaux or Saint Emilion I cannot recommend it highly enough. Bordeaux is the heart of wine country but there are beautiful museums, parks, château and more to see. As for Saint Emilion it is a quaint, medieval, world heritage site.

In a past life I spent the summer with friends in Bordeaux looking for a chateau and a vineyard to buy(them, not me). We had a wonderful time exploring the area, learning more about wine, tasting and exploring villages and old houses. It was a lot of fun, ironically I don’t drink wine, then or now.

Jardins de Roquelin

Speaking of France, if you are traveling to the Loire Valley any time soon make sure to bookmark the Jardins de Roquelin.

Stéphane Chassine and his wife, Ailine, transformed a 2.5 acre farm into a magnificent garden. Created in 2002 and opened to the public in 2005, the garden was awarded the title ‘Jardin Remarquable’, by the French Ministry of Culture.

The English style garden has 500 varieties of roses, including tea roses, Rugosa, Damascus, Alba, Bourbon and Gallic roses. Many of the roses are old cultivators, in shades of pinks, some of  which look like peonies.

If you love roses you a side trip to visit the gardens is a must. Learn more about it at www.lesjardinsderoquelin.com and on Instagram.

Documentaties to Watch

Jim Henson Idea Man

Most everyone has watched Sesame Street or the Muppets, the iconic puppets created by Jim Henson. I can remember as a child Bert, Ernie, Big Bird and Cookie Monster being a part of my afternoon, learning the alphabet and to count as well as to sing. They are all still on Sesame Street, and have been joined by Elmo and Abby, teaching a new generation of kids manners, kindness and all of the other lessons Jim Henson hoped.

This month a new film directed by Ron Howard tells the story if this iconic puppeteer, and I cannot wait to watch it. You can watch it here.

Brats~The Brat Pack

If you grew up in the 80 and 90’s chances are you followed the antics of “the Brat Pack”, watched all of their movies and maybe even wished you were part of their tight knit group. You can catch up with the pack when you watch, Andrew McCarthys’ documentary.

  1. Elizabeth! What a treat to have the US Open on your doorstep. I’m not a golfer or a huge fan, but Jim is and so I watch a lot of golf. Seeing these big names up close and personal … and interacting together in practice … what be a thrill. I can’t wait to share this with Jim who will be glued to the tournament all weekend. Your topics today make me want to book a trip to France. I’m looking forward to watching the Jim Henson documentary … and the Brat Packers too. Happy Father’s Day weekend! xo

    1. Juliet,
You and Jim should come to visit! If Jim loves golf this is the place to be, our club has 10 golf courses including the famous No.2. Moore County is “the Home of American golf” and there are 40 golf courses! He would love every minute!
France is such a beautiful country and I have been lucky enough to travel all over it in the last 40 years. There is so much more than Paris to see.
HAve a wonderful Fathers Day weekend Juliet. I hope that the memories of your dad bring you a little comfort on this day. He sounds like an wonderful man.
      xo

  2. I enjoyed the article about the woman who tried to solve a murder case. I’ve been there. You do tend to go down a rabbit hole. I had a similar case. But then the daughter, who had only been a toddler when her pilot father allegedly murdered her mother and tossed her from a plane, didn’t want the publicity. And I respected her wishes. I have never changed my position on that or regretted it.

  3. Elizabeth how exciting you live in Pinehurst right near the action. I told my dad about this. He’s a huge golf fan. I am impressed you guys walked 17 miles in one day. I think they’d have to scrape me off the ground after that. No kidding about being a little tired, but you had to! How fun. I have always wanted to go to the Pebble Beach tournament here.. Someday. By the way, your dad sounds amazing. I hope he heals soon and keeps playing basketball at 85! They have to keep going, it keeps them young!

I have now marked Saint E as a place to go. I am hoping to get to France again soon. You had me at Medieval Village. That must have been a fun season traveling with you friends looking for a house. The gardens are gorgeous. You have done some wonderful travel.

Thank you for sharing my summer post. That was so sweet. I love both of your looks! I can never have enough stripe tops and that green Mango bag … I love it.
I am popping over now to see about making Max these muffins. Nice that it makes just 6..
Hoping you have a lovely weekend! xoxo

    1. Kim,
If you go to Pebble Beach go the the first day of practice, it is so fun! The players are more relaxed, fun and the crowds are so much less than on the actual tournament day. We are having a great time, meeting lots of visitors to the area and sharing our sweet village. Walking is my favorite “sport” and I knew that we would walk a long way bet I never thought it would be that far. Oddly enough we were not tired at all while walking but the minute we walked in the door we were exhausted.
My dad is a vibrant 85 year old, he gets up every day and he has a long schedule, he plays baseball, lawn bowling, pool at the senior center and is a voracious reader. He also loves to bake like me and cook. Thank you for your kind and healing words.
You will love Saint Emilion. Add Sarlat to your list as well, it is an amazing Medieval town with a beautiful cathedral. And Rocamadour which is another beautiful place to visit.
I hope that you try the muffins, 6 is the perfect amount to share and enjoy.
Have a wonderful Father’s Day Kim. I hope that Max is on the med soon.
      xo

  4. Oops almost forget to say thank you about sharing Jim Henson. I was crying just at the Trailer.. Max is a huge Muppets fan. We will watch this weekend – and I want to see Brats too. x

  5. Hi Elizabeth,
Great memories to have the US Golf Championship so close. The golf course looks beautiful. I’m so impressed you were both able to walk 17 miles. I bet you were very tired. You guys must be in great shape. I recall hiking for 14 miles when I was probably in my mid fourties’ and the last 2 miles I hit the wall, it was my legs that were done. Were you sore the next day? What an exciting day for you. I’m with you on crowds. If’s nice to be out super early when it’s quiet and peaceful.
I have not had a chance to look into everything else you shared. I will just say thank you.
    Have a lovely weekend.

    1. Katherine,
Thank you! We have certainly had a fun time and have Ade lots of memories. The next one is 6 years from now. I am now sure about great shape but we do love to walk.
I wasn’t sore the next day but I was a little tired.
I hope that you found something else to enjoy in the post.
      Have a wonderful weekend,
      Elizabeth
