Sims-Hilditch, Barnsley House, Commonplace books and more on Weekend Meanderings.

Good morning and a happy Saturday to you! It’s time for weekend meandering with Kim and Juliet, our weekly series where we share all of the things that piqued our interest and caught our eye over the past week.
It’s Veterans day so I just wanted to take a minute to say thank you to all of the veterans in this country, including my brother, step-father, dad and countless uncles, cousins and friends. Thank you for your service and sacrifice.
On a side note, did you read that Eddie Bauer, Johnson and Johnson and many other companies are changing their logos because Gen Z can’t read cursive? What do you think about that?
Ok, on to weekend meanderings. Pour yourself a coffee, tea or chocolate and settle in because I have lots to share.

Commonplace Book
Have you ever heard of a commonplace book?
Commonplace Books are not to be confused with a diary, they are journals, notebooks or scrapbooks where one writes ideas, quotes, recipes, reading lists, saying, drawings, poems, clippings, ticket stubs, or any other bit of information they want to save and come back to.

In the past entries were kept in categories so that one could refer back to them sort of like a data base. In fact, students Harvard and Oxford were required to keep them for their humanities and literature classes.
Commonplace books were kept by Napoleon, Lewis Carrol, Virginia Woolf, John Locke, and Mark Twain to name just a few notables.
I’ve kept commonplace books for years, I just never realized they had a name. In the age of social media sometimes we forget the beauty of a pen and paper.
Why not start a new-old habit and keep a Commonplace Book? You can use something as simple as a composition book or Moleskin notebook or something fancier. I just ordered this one.

Hi!
Elizabeth, I loved Emma Sims style and kitchen and will follow. The Cotswolds place looks beautiful… I need to go back . People there really seem to be living their best lives! I want to do the same.
I have been keeping a journal scrapbook on my planner for years and I didn’t know it is called that. It’s wonderful to look back at too. You can remember more of the years past..and special things.
The jacket with the bows is beautiful.. Love the holiday look too.
Hope you have a beautiful weekend! xo
I recently heard on NPR that California is (or soon will be) requiring again that children be taught to write cursive!
Thanks as always for brightening my Saturday morning!
Sarah, that is good to know. They should reinstate that everywhere. When I lived in VA they stopped teaching it I cannot remember if they started again. It is just a shame what we are doing to our kids.
Hi Elizabeth, not only can Gen Z not read cursive, they can’t read the time from an analogue watch or clock. My 16 year old daughter informed me of this a few weeks ago. To say I was shocked is an understatement. She told me that a friend asked her what the time was and my daughter said look at the wall clock and the friend made an excuse. My daughter realised what was going on and told her the time, she said many of the students in her year level can’t tell the time on analogue. I wonder what the parents are teaching their children, I remember spending time teaching my 2 to tell the time, we actually made a paper clock and played with it. The same when I see parents taking their kids for a walk and the parents to busy on their mobiles instead of engaging their children with the sites and nature around them. That’s my rant, sorry. Have a wonderful week.
Should read too busy .
Following Emma Sims immediately. The Barnsley House Hotel looks like heaven. I’m ready to check in for an enchanted Christmas. Love the idea of a commonplace book. I hadn’t heard the term before either. Hope you have a great weekend! xo
Emma Sima is amazing. There are so many amazing people on Instagram.
The Barnsley house and most country houses in the UK are amazing for the holidays. It is one of my favorite times of the year to visit there.
Have a great week Juliet.
I keep scrap books, but much prefer the name Commonplace Book, so will call them that from now on.
Gorgeous clothes as always Elizabeth, your blog is always inspiring, thank you xx
Jude, I love the idea of a commonplace book. I’ve kept books for years with quotes, facts and articles, etc.
Have a wonderful week! I hope that you are enjoying your time in Brittany.
The big companies should not change their logos. The younger people probably don’t even care. Most probably do Shopping online for groceries, then the list from last week is easy to access and repeat the purchase; no need really for looking at brands per se . I taught my twenty something kids cursive writing and neither uses it now except for their signatures.
I could not agree more. I cannot believe that we are changing logos. Perhaps we should actually teach kids skills, like reading, writing, finances, how to cook, etc.
It is a sad state and seems to get worse by the day.
Both you and Kim have me wanting to plan a trip (or have HOWARD plan) to the Cotswolds. I’ve been ch3cking out all your links. I love that Paris apartment paper…we lived in a building like that when we were there 25 years ago. My kids would like it too.
Mary Ann,
There is SO much to see in the Cotswolds, and the Lake District and the Peak District. You would love it all.
Have a wonderful week!
