Three films, Monty Don, and Kristy Woodson Harvey’s new novel

It has been one of those weeks. Pisa had an ear infection — which meant two vet visits, ear drops twice a day, and the outrage of a dachshund who could not hear and was sick of the vet and me. Then Paris and Patches were in for vaccinations on a different day. Throw in the usual appointments and errands and everything else you do to keep life running, and by yesterday afternoon I was completely spent. I did not stop all week or at least that’s how it felt.
Thank goodness it is the weekend. This morning the porch is calling, there are cocktails with friends tonight, pool time, a botanical garden, and a little putting on the agenda.
Juliet, Kim, and I have lots to share. Let’s meander.

On the Screen This Week
I watched Crossword this week and I’m still thinking about it. A lonely woman who loves the daily crossword starts to notice the answers are everywhere around her — in the streets, the conversations, the unremarkable moments of her day. It’s a little magical and a little romantic.
The Christophers is in theaters now and it is so good. Ian McKellen and Michaela Coel — the estranged children of a famous artist who hire a forger to finish his paintings after his death, so they can be sold as originals. Ninety-six percent on Rotten Tomatoes and I believe it. I cannot wait to see it.
And I have watched the trailer for Hershey. It’s the story of Milton and Catherine Hershey — due at Thanksgiving — and the real story is so much bigger than the chocolate bar. He failed in business over and over before he built the empire. Then he gave most of it away. To a school for kids who needed one. To a community. I will be first in line.
The Rosebud Podcast
A reader recommended the Rosebud podcast to me, specifically this episode, and I cannot thank her enough. It features Monty Don — and if you love Monty as much as I do, this will be one of your favorites of the year.
Gyles Brandreth interviews him about his childhood, his father — a former Army heavyweight boxing champion who came home from the war a changed man — boarding school, cancer at ten, meeting Sarah, the jewelry business, depression, and finally gardens. Why they matter. Which one is his favorite in the UK. What gives one charm over another.
I listened on my morning walk and did not want it to end.
In the Garden This Week
I have been watching Secret Garden — Oxfordshire and it will make you look at your own garden completely differently. David Attenborough, but not the garden you think you know — the one underneath it. The soil, the dark, the drama happening while you’re deadheading the roses. [Link]
And Dame Judi Dench on the The Royal Horticultural Society. — her love of Shakespeare, her fear of worms, her memories of her family garden. Subscribe. [Link]

My friend and fellow blogger Kristy Woodson Harvey publishes her new novel, Summer State of Mind, in two weeks. Kristy is a New York Times bestselling author and one of the most generous people in this little world of ours. Her new book is set in coastal North Carolina — Cape Carolina — and begins with a burnt-out NICU nurse who runs away from the worst day of her career looking for something quieter. On her first day in town, a local baseball coach discovers an abandoned baby, and the whole tight-knit community is changed. Secrets, second chances, a batty aunt named Tilley, and a community theater production of Hello, Dolly.
It publishes May 5th. Pre-order it here.
