Quintessence, Peter Copping, Rambert Rigaud, Millie Bobbie Brown, and more on Monday Musings.
Good morning friends, I hope that you had a great weekend. We spent the weekend starting to clean up the yard from the storm that felled the tree, that landed on the house. For those who asked about the tree, the damage, etc here is a little bit more information. Skip to the good stuff if you are not interested in the tree story I realize that there are much more important things going on in the world and this is minuscule compared to them.
The Storm and the Tree
There was a rain and wind storm, not unlike others we have had since we moved here. This storm seemed more severe, and had very high winds.
We never heard the tree hit the house, we heard the branches of the tree breaking and cracking as it collided with other trees. After the tree fell on the house it crashed into the branches of bunch of other trees on the back side of the house.
Our lot is filled with Longleaf pine trees, the whole neighborhood and village are as well. The tree that fell was about 10-12 feet from the house, it is roughly 40-45 years old and perfectly healthy. The reason that I know it was healthy is the forest service inspects the trees and our report reflected that, as does the tree itself.
Many pine trees fell in the neighborhood during the storm, on the roads, driveways, and the golf course. As far as I know we are the only one that had one land on the house. We believe the high winds caused the trees to fall.
Damage
So far we do not know the full extent of the damage, we do know that we have some structural issues. The tree crashed about 6 inches to the right of the peak and main support beam of the room. That side of the roof/attic houses the electric, HVAC duct work, etc. The tree fell on the side of the house that is comprised of the master bedroom, master bathroom and a 500 sq. ft. “artist studio”. Thankfully most of the damage is in the artists studio.
We will not be moving out of the house while the repairs are made because we can sleep in the other rooms and use the rest of the house.
We are fine, our pups are fine. That said, we are sad because now we have a big project ahead getting the house repaired, the roof fixed, finding matching brick, and getting new landscaping(which we had installed 1 year ago and is now squashed and damaged from the falling bricks and debris). Thankfully we have a great contractor, let’s pray the insurance company is just as good.
I appreciate your kindness and concern and thank you for asking about the pups and praying for us.
Ok, on to +5 Things.
1. READ~
I shared this on Friday Favorites a few weeks ago and finally read it this week.
Love blooms in the darkest days…
It’s 1942, and air raid sirens continue to wail around London. Eighteen-year-old Nellie Morris counts every day lucky that she emerges from the underground shelters unharmed, her loving family still surrounding her.
After a chance encounter with Ray, an American airman stationed nearby, Nellie becomes enchanted with the idea of a broader world. Just when Nellie begins to embrace an exciting new life with Ray, a terrible incident occurs during an air raid one evening, tearing Nellie’s world apart. But just when it seems all hope is lost, Nellie finds that, against all odds, love and happiness can triumph.
Nineteen Steps is a deeply affecting, mesmerizing page-turner inspired by the author’s family history. An epic story of longing, loss, and secrets, Millie Bobby Brown’s propulsive debut introduces an unforgettable, brave young woman and boldly portrays the strength in the power of love.

COS has some beautiful dresses this season, and this linen dress is one of them. It is comfortable, classic and a piece that you will have in your closet for years. After all linen is the perfect fabric for summer, unless you don’t like wrinkles.
Dress it up with the “new it” jewelry, a brooch or down with some fun earrings or a bracelet for a little understated elegance. For 15 ways to wear a brooch read this post.
The sandals are on sale, they remind me of a pair I have from Tory Burch. You could also wear flip flops, wedges or sneakers.

On My Radar
m in HI says
So glad to hear no one was hurt with the tree falling down. Weather temps don’t change much where I live and I enjoy that. Fascinating to know that Bridget Jones will be returning- looking forward to it. Thanks for sharing that news with us!
Elizabeth says
Thank you! I hope that you have a great week.
Elle says
So glad you are safe and were not alone during the storm and resulting damage. Tell us more later.
Elizabeth says
Elle, if the storm had been Friday I would have been here dealing with all of this myself. Thankfully my husband canceled his trip and we are here dealing with it together. Sadly my 96 year old mother in law missed out on a visit from her son.
I will keep you posted on the progress.
Have a wonderful week.
Katherine says
Dear Elizabeth,
My thoughts continue to be with you. I feel so bad for you guys. It is what it is, it sounds like you both are all over it. I hope your
insurance is easy to work with. Thank goodness you do not have to move out.
Elizabeth says
Thank you Katherine. We are trying to be optimistic and who knows maybe while the house is disarray we may just add one or two more projects to the chaos and finally be finished with the entire house.
I cannot even imagine having to move out, living in an extended stay hotel with 3 dogs for 3.5 weeks was bad enough. I don’t think I could do it for longer than that.
Have a wonderful week and thank you again.
