I have always loved white dresses. The trouble is that I have three dachshunds. Every single time I put one on, there they are, Pisa, Paris, and Patches, standing on their hind legs, little paws planted right on my hem, demanding a little or a lot of attention. Inevitably, I end up with something on my dress. At this point I consider the paw prints a design element.

Fabrics with some body to them skim rather than cling, and that makes all the difference in both comfort and the way a dress fits. How to Style a White Dress

White is a canvas, and that is exactly the point. Add your personality to it, a collection of gold jewelry, a straw bag, a scarf looped through the belt loops, a colorful bag and shoes in whatever shade makes you happy. I love to wear my enamel bangle bracelets with a white dress, stacked up the arm, or a single bold cuff that does all the talking.

A brooch is another thing entirely and one of my favorite ways to dress up a white dress. Pin one at the neckline, at the shoulder, or at the waist of a belt and it transforms the whole look. A lightweight cardigan in navy or soft green works beautifully when the air conditioning is doing its best to convince you it is January. Shoes set the whole mood. White with a flat sandal is easy and breezy, perfect for a day at home, the market, or strolling the streets of Paris. With a wedge espadrille it is pulled together and summer-perfect, and I am a wedge devotee. With a block-heeled mule it reads smart and intentional. The same little white dress can go from your next brunch to a chic celebration dinner with nothing more than a change of shoes and earrings. That is a personal style win right there.

White Eyelet Midi Dress

Eyelet is the detail that makes a white dress feel summery. The texture adds interest, the silhouette is flattering, and this is the kind of dress that looks beautiful whether you are at a formal occasion or a casual afternoon in the garden. A long sleeve eyelet dress has a lovely balance of coverage and warmth without feeling heavy and a short sleeved one keeps you cool on hot humid days.

This is the one I come back to every summer. Belted at the waist, a little flare in the skirt, it is the silhouette that never goes out of style because it was never really about a trend to begin with. I still wear them with dresses made of lighter cotton fabrics, it may be old fashioned but at least know one is seeing more than they should.

Off-white, ivory, and cream are all beautiful options and often more forgiving than bright white. Do not discount a dress because it leans warm, some of the loveliest summer dresses read ivory rather than stark white, and the effect is softer and elegant.

A good stain remover is your peace of mind. I keep one on hand at all times, largely because of three small dogs with dirty paws.
