The Best White Dresses for Women Over 50

Timeless style, flattering fits, and why a little white dress belongs in every woman’s wardrobe.

There is something about a white dress in summer that never fails. It is cool in the heat, elegant without effort, and somehow makes you look as if you are on your way somewhere wonderful, even if you are only going to the farmers market.

I have always loved white dresses. The trouble is that I have three dachshunds. Every single time I put one on, there they are, Pisa, Paris, and Patches, standing on their hind legs, little paws planted right on my hem, demanding a little or a lot of attention. Inevitably, I end up with something on my dress. At this point I consider the paw prints a design element.

If you have been hesitant about wearing white, thinking it is too hard, too unforgiving, or simply not for you at this stage of life, I want to gently push back on that. A well-chosen white dress is one of the most flattering things a woman over 50 can wear. The versatility of a white dress is genuinely unmatched: dress it up, dress it down, change the jewelry, change the shoes, and you have an entirely different outfit. The timeless style of a simple white dress never goes out of fashion, and it works across a multitude of occasions in a way almost nothing else in your wardrobe does.

Whether you are shopping for a little white dress for a date night, a white maxi dress for a summer garden party, or a classic wardrobe staple you will reach for from May through Labor Day, here is everything you need to know.

What Makes a White Dress Work After 50

Fabric is everything. Reach for linen, cotton voile, eyelet, or a substantial crepe, anything with a little weight and structure to it. Fabrics with some body to them skim rather than cling, and that makes all the difference in both comfort and the way a dress fits. Unique textures like eyelet, smocking, and embroidery do the heavy lifting style-wise and keep a white dress from reading as a plain white nightgown.

The most beautiful dress falls flat if it does not fit properly. Look for a defined waistline or an adjustable tie belt, sleeve if you prefer a little coverage and a length that you feel confident in. Long sleeve and short sleeve versions of the same style can read very differently on the same body. Midi and maxi lengths are endlessly flattering. A white maxi dress in a flowing fabric is graceful without trying.

My own preferences have been shaped by decades of figuring out what actually works. I love a shirtdress that is belted with a flared hem, the 1950s silhouette. The kind J. Peterman used to feature in his catalogs in those pen-and-ink illustrations with a story wrapped around each one. Smart, classic, and endlessly versatile. I can wear a dress like that to dinner, traveling, or church and feel exactly like me. Flowy maxi dresses and caftans are the other half of my white dress wardrobe. At home, at the club, over a swimsuit, out for lunch, or honestly wherever the day takes me. Both silhouettes dress up or down without any effort at all.

Think about where you will actually wear it. A dress that works for brunch, a casual day out, and dinner on a patio at the club with a simple change of accessories is more useful than something you will only put on once. The best white dresses earn their closet space by going many places, just like a little black dress.

How to Style a White Dress

White is a canvas, and that is exactly the point. Add your personality to it, a collection of gold jewelry, a straw bag, a scarf looped through the belt loops, a colorful bag and shoes in whatever shade makes you happy. I love to wear my enamel bangle bracelets with a white dress, stacked up the arm, or a single bold cuff that does all the talking.

A brooch is another thing entirely and one of my favorite ways to dress up a white dress. Pin one at the neckline, at the shoulder, or at the waist of a belt and it transforms the whole look. If you have never thought of yourself as a brooch person, I suspect that is about to change, I have a post on 15 ways to wear brooches and pins that might just convince you.

Layering transforms a white dress across seasons and settings. A denim jacket makes it casual and relaxed, Cindy does this look beautifully. A linen blazer makes it polished, a favorite of Juliet’s. A wide-brimmed hat makes it cinematic, like a lady of leisure at the Cote d’Azur. A lightweight cardigan in navy or soft green works beautifully when the air conditioning is doing its best to convince you it is January. A sweetheart neckline pairs well with a delicate pendant, perhaps one from your children or a family heirloom. A more open collar invites bolder jewelry, bright red coral, turquoise, or lapis lazuli.

Shoes set the whole mood. White with a flat sandal is easy and breezy, perfect for a day at home, the market, or strolling the streets of Paris. With a wedge espadrille it is pulled together and summer-perfect, and I am a wedge devotee. With a block-heeled mule it reads smart and intentional. The same little white dress can go from your next brunch to a chic celebration dinner with nothing more than a change of shoes and earrings. That is a personal style win right there.

Six White Dresses Worth Wearing This Summer

White Eyelet Dress

Eyelet is the detail that makes a white dress feel summery. The texture adds interest, the silhouette is flattering, and this is the kind of dress that looks beautiful whether you are at a formal occasion or a casual afternoon in the garden. A long sleeve eyelet dress has a lovely balance of coverage and warmth without feeling heavy and a short sleeved one keeps you cool on hot humid days.

Belted Shirtdress with Flared Hem

This is the one I come back to every summer. Belted at the waist, a little flare in the skirt, it is the silhouette that never goes out of style because it was never really about a trend to begin with. Wear it to dinner, to church, on a plane, and you will always look as if you gave it some thought.

A wrap dress is one of the most universally flattering shapes, and in white it is especially good. The adjustable fit works on a range of figures, and the soft drape skims your body. This is the dress for special events where you want to look elegant but also feel like yourself.

White Maxi Dress

A maxi in a flowing fabric is endlessly graceful, the kind of dress that belongs somewhere slow and beautiful, like a garden party or a dinner on a stone terrace. Wear it over a swimsuit, out for lunch, or at the club. Look for one with enough weight to drape well and you will reach for it constantly.

Caftan or Embroidered White Dress

A caftan is one of the best things to put on in summer heat. It asks nothing of you and gives everything back. Add embroidery or a beautiful neckline detail and it goes from pool cover-up to dinner without missing a beat.

For a lighter, easier take, a short sleeve or flutter sleeve dress in a clean simple cut goes everywhere without fuss.

A Few Practical Notes Before You Shop

Nude or seamless undergarments are not optional with white. You know this. This is your gentle reminder anyway. You may even need a slip, does anyone remember those? I still wear them with dresses made of lighter cotton fabrics, it may be old fashioned but at least know one is seeing more than they should.

Off-white, ivory, and cream are all beautiful options and often more forgiving than bright white. Do not discount a dress because it leans warm, some of the loveliest summer dresses read ivory rather than stark white, and the effect is softer and elegant.

A good stain remover is your peace of mind. I keep one on hand at all times, largely because of three small dogs with dirty paws.

The white dress is one of those wardrobe investments that rewards you every single time you wear it. It is simple, it is timeless, and there is a version of it that is exactly right for your life and your personal style. I hope one of these finds its way into your closet this summer.

Yours may end up with paw prints on the hem or sticky fingerprints from the grandkids. I can confirm you will survive and the spots will some out.

Tell me, do you have a white dress you love and reach for every summer? Or is this the year you finally find your perfect white dress?
