MONDAY MUSINGS NO. 139
Good morning friends, happy Monday musings to you. How was your weekend? Mine was low key, fun, freeing, uplifting and lots more.
First let me say thank you again for all of your kind messages about Pisa, she is doing great. We will be monitoring her lump and she is now on medication for her ear.
Second, it was so nice to be back with Juliet for Weekend Meanderings! Kim was in Carmel for her birthday and will be back next week.
Ok, the weekend. I am not sure why or what happened but a few weeks ago I just decided I had to clean and clear out my life. I’m pretty sure this was precipitated by the declining health of my mother in law, but that is a story for another day.
On Thursday I began by sorting, and shredding all of our paperwork. We had taxes and paperwork from 25 years ago. Then this weekend I started a real, not a half hearted attempt but a real purge of my closet(s). I just don’t wear or want all of this stuff any more.
As the bags started to fill and old “friends and finds” came out of the closet I felt lighter for getting rid of the stuff. But also uplifted because in the depths I found things I hadn’t worn in years that I loved, that fit and looked nice for the upcoming season.
I’ve set a goal that once the remodel is finished which still gives me a couple of months, that everything will be cleaned out, sorted, given to new homes. Not just the closet, but the entire house, we still have unpacked boxes in the garage, piles of art and furniture that is “homeless.” Then we will finally be able to enjoy out “new” old house that we has been under construction, being remodeled, moved into, moved around in for 3 years.
What about you? What did you get up too?
Ok, on to +5 Things.
1.READ~

This is such an interesting book.
For anyone who’s ever picked an apple fresh from the tree or enjoyed a glass of cider, writer and orchardist Diane Flynt offers a new history of the apple and how it changed the South and the nation. Showing how southerners cultivated over 2,000 apple varieties from Virginia to Mississippi, Flynt shares surprising stories of a fruit that was central to the region for over 200 years. Colorful characters abound in this history, including aristocratic Belgian immigrants, South Carolina plantation owners, and multiple presidents, each group changing the course of southern orchards. She shows how southern apples, ranging from northern varieties that found fame on southern soil to hyper-local apples grown by a single family, have a history beyond the region, from Queen Victoria’s court to the Oregon Trail. Flynt also tells us the darker side of the story, detailing how apples were entwined with slavery and the theft of Indigenous land. She relates the ways southerners lost their rich apple culture in less than the lifetime of a tree and offers a tentatively hopeful future.

It’s a classic piece that you will wear for years to come. Pair it with jeans, slacks, a dress or a skirt, it works with everything.

On My Radar

Hi Elizabeth,
Yay for you on cleaning out. Once you get a mind set and are totally motivated look out.
To shred all that paper is a huge job in its self.
You are going to feel so awesome when you have completed this HUGE task.
I’m moving very slowly cleaning out. What I’m doing so far makes me feel so happy. I tend to “pack rat,” thinking I might need that. I’ve been given orders from my honey, to hit my closet. That is where I fall apart, hopefully I will not fall into a bad habit of keeping.
Katherine, I am making great progress but there is still a lot more to do. It is amazing how much stuff we accumulate. I am motivated by a finished house and the holidays.
I am a bit of a pack rat too, but my husband is worse.
Take care and have a wonderful week.
