Friday Favorites No. 655
Good morning friends! How was your first week of Fall? What did you do? Jump in a pile of leaves, light your first fire in the fireplace, bake something pumpkin, make a pot of soup, go leaf peeping, tick a few things off your bucket list?
Although it is Fall it doesn’t really feel like it here. It has been in the high 80s’ so this week instead of wearing sweaters we were wearing swimsuits at the pool. The cool, crisp air will be here soon enough so I guess I will just enjoy the waining days of heat.
I have a fun weekend ahead, including dinner with a friend, and a violin concert. What about you? What are your plans?
I have lot’s to share so let’s get to it!
Food
It’s soup season! This week I found three tasty soup recipes that I think you will love.

Miso, peanut ramen bowls, sweet and creamy savory broth ladled into bowls with noodles, crispy crumbled tofu, and fresh veggies!

Creamy vegan potato and leek soup, a cosy, comforting soup for a cool day.

Doesn’t this look and sound delicious? Chicken and pumpkin dumplings!

Pumpkin lovers, try this pumpkin marble loaf this weekend.

Vianne
On the evening of July 4th, a young woman scatters her mother’s ashes in New York and follows the call of the changing winds to the French coastal city of Marseille.
For the first time in her life, Vianne feels in control of her future. Charming her way into a job as a waitress, she tries to fit in, make friends, and come to terms with her pregnancy, knowing that by the time her child is born, the turning wind will have changed once again.
As she discovers the joy of cooking for the very first time, making local recipes her own with the addition of bittersweet chocolate spices, she learns that this humble magic has the power to unlock secrets.
And yet her gift comes at a price. And Vianne has a secret of her own; a secret that threatens everything…

On a bluff above a river rises The House, where elderly and disabled residents live alongside young people who help out in exchange for free rent. The community is led by a former punk singer who never wanted to be responsible for anyone yet now finds herself the caretaker of this precarious collection of lives. It’s not a family, exactly, but it’s got the complicated, sometimes painful, sometimes hilarious, dynamics of kinship.
When two kids—Nola and her little cousin James—show up on The House’s back porch in need of refuge, the whole experiment is thrown into question. All are welcome here, or that was the idea. But the authorities are looking for these children, and The House’s finances are teetering on the edge.
Zumas’s long-anticipated third novel wrestles with America’s crisis of care in a taut, aching, polyphonic tale that moves as fast as the crackling comebacks that fly between The House’s residents over breakfast. As the rules of the outside world start to press in on this safe haven, readers will find themselves asking, what would the world look like if everyone had a place to belong?

The Witches of New York
Respectable Lady Seeks Dependable Shop Girl. Those averse to magic need not apply.
New York in the spring of 1880 is a place alive with wonder and curiosity. Determined to learn the truth about the world, its residents enthusiastically engage in both scientific experimentation and spiritualist pursuits. Séances are the entertainment of choice in exclusive social circles, and many enterprising women—some possessed of true intuitive powers, and some gifted with the art of performance—find work as mediums.
Enter Adelaide Thom and Eleanor St. Clair. At their humble teashop, Tea and Sympathy, they provide a place for whispered confessions, secret cures, and spiritual assignations for a select society of ladies, who speak the right words and ask the right questions. But the profile of Tea and Sympathy is about to change with the fortuitous arrival of Beatrice Dunn.
When seventeen-year-old Beatrice leaves the safety of her village to answer an ad that reads “Respectable Lady Seeks Dependable Shop Girl. Those averse to magic need not apply,” she has little inclination of what the job will demand of her. Beatrice doesn’t know it yet, but she is no ordinary small-town girl; she has great spiritual gifts—ones that will serve as her greatest asset and also place her in grave danger. Under the tutelage of Adelaide and Eleanor, Beatrice comes to harness many of her powers, but not even they can prepare her for the evils lurking in the darkest corners of the city or the courage it will take to face them.

SHOPPING~OUTFIT OF THE DAY

If you like black but don’t want to dress in it head to toe try adding dark green or dark grey. It is a sophisticated and easy look. This week I paired a kaki green skirt with a cashmere sweater, suede boots and a bag. It’s brooch season so pull out one or two of your favorites, this black bow is perfect, and add it to the sweater. You could also wear heels, for a dressier look or booties if you wanted something more casual.
Brooches are not just for coats and sweaters there are lots of different ways to wear them and add a little sparkle to your outfit, here are 15 Ways to Wear Brooches.

On My Radar~Fall

Hi Elizabeth,
I read around 3 books a week, and this year by far my favorite has been The Correspondent by Virginia Evans. Such a great epistolary novel and the author’s debut on top of it. I’m still thinking about it a month later.
Peace and love from Ojai, CA.
Dani, thank you for the recommendation! I just ordered it on my Kindle and will be reading it this weekend!
Have a wonderful weekend.
As my husband and I are on a long road trip with our RV, I take advantage of my opportunities for extra reading. I read quite a lot at home, but being away from home makes it even more appealing to me. At the moment I am reading Room With a View by E.M. Forster which I’ve had on my list for a very long time. I can’t imagine the world without real books to read!
Paula, I could not agreee more, what would the world be like without books? I cannot imagine my life without reading!!!
Enjoy Room With A View, I haven’t read it in years, I might have to pull it out again.
Enjoy your RV trip, travel safe.
